Web Apps | Web Based Applications
What is a “web-based application”?
This is simply a program running on a computer (called a server) that's located elsewhere, instead of on your PC or Mac at your desk. That location is usually in the cloud (meaning it runs in the Internet). It also means that the application is written in a typical web language (like PHP or C#.Net).
Why does this matter?
It means the end of installing individual software client programs (like Word or Excel) on each PC or Mac. The only software required on the user’s computer to use the application is an Internet browser. The application would look and feel like a local application, but it would always be the latest version, unlike the locally installed programs.
As we mentioned above, when a new version is installed, everyone automatically has access to it. This is a great way to save time and money! End-users won't have to be inconvenienced by someone from IT coming to their workplace and installing any new software. Multiply that time savings and eliminated frustration by the number of employees you have. You will not only improve your bottom line, you will also have happier employees.
What about mobile phones?
A web application can be used by any smart phone, phablet or tablet, that isn't possible with 'normal' applications. If desired, the web application can also be responsive. This means that the usability on a mobile device can be very, very good!
Aren't these types of programs less feature-rich (weaker) than the old-style program?
Absolutely not! Modern Internet technology offers everything that you could, or would, expect in your locally-installed programs. In fact, you can do many things using a web-based application that are impossible with the local client program.
